How did batman die and what the story with the news batman?

Ok my friend mike loves Batman and he and his friends keep talking about him I don't follow comic books but I want to be apart of the conversation help me!How did batman die and what the story with the news batman?
Ikari did a great response, but, i will like to state that Batman has really died and no at the same time.

Batman suffered something called the Omega Sanction, it is a power beam that was shot by Darkseid, in Final Crisis #6.

Their effects are unclear, but the principal definition is that you will suffer consequent deaths, with each one being worse than the previous.

So by any means, Batman is actually dead, there is a corpse also, but it is presumed that he has reincarnate in some form or in some alternative world.

At this moment things are not clear, and with Grant morrison麓s "Multidiversity" Project, things are less clear than ever. How did batman die and what the story with the news batman?
Spoiler details to follow.

Bruce Wayne as Batman is rumored to be dead following the events of the Batman RIP and Final Crisis. He is shown to have died in Final Crisis #6 at the hands of Darkseid who shoots him with his Omega Sanction at the same instant Batman shoots Darkseid.

Final Crisis #7 indicates that Bruce is NOT dead, and was merely transported back into the distant past where he is currently stranded.

Currently, noone has taken on the Cowl permanently as the new Batman, but people have stepped up to fill the power vacuum left by the dark knight's absence in Gotham. A new, more violent Batman (who kills criminals) and uses guns has installed himself as the "new" Batman, while Robin (Tim Drake) dons the cowl to try to stop him.

When last I read, (Battle for the Cowl #2) the "new" Batman, who has been revealed to be Jason Todd (The second Robin) had just seriously wounded or possibly killed Tim Drake (the third Robin, who was wearing Batman's old suit) and was about to try and kill Nightwing so noone could stand in his way of taking Bruce's place permanently.
